A studio built around the long view.
Brackenward is a small landscape practice in southern England. We design gardens, then stay to help them grow into themselves.
A garden is not finished on handover.
Brackenward began with a frustration: gardens were being drawn beautifully, installed quickly, and then left to whoever happened to be cutting the grass. The design held for one season and slowly lost its argument.
So we built the practice the other way round. Design, horticulture, and delivery sit at one table from the first site walk, and the same people stay with the garden while it establishes. It makes us slower to start and far better in year five.
We take a small number of commissions each year across southern England, with selected coastal and rural work elsewhere in the UK.

Materials that age well
Stone, clay, and timber are chosen for how they weather. A surface that improves over ten years is worth more than one that photographs well on day one.
